Scent Characteristics:Vetiver has a very grassy/woodsy scent, like old trees in the forest.
History: Historically used in perfume. The roots are often used for bad breath and to treat fevers. In Latin America, they would make a tea and drink it for digestive issues as well as aches and pains. In India, the plant is often hung over windows and placed in clothing to repel insects. Closely related to Sorghum, as well as other flavorful grasses like Lemongrass, Vetiver is often used as food flavoring. The plant is useful in more ways than these as it is also planted for erosion control and to protect fields from insects.
Benefits: Vetiver is the key essential oil used to treat ADHD/ADD issues. *A 2001 study done by Dr. Terry S. Friedman M.D., A.B.H.M. showed that smelling Vetiver essential oil twice daily improved the performance of children with ADD and ADHD by a tremendous amount. Part of why it works is because it helps your entire vessel system to activate blood supply or to detoxify connective tissue. It helps fortify red blood cells, which in turn increases oxygen to the brain. This is one of the top oils for calming the mind. It helps you focus on needed tasks. It can also help you ease off of prescribed tranquilizers. It helps ease symptoms of postpartum depression, insomnia, and mental exhaustion. Vetiver helps relax tight muscles. It is deeply relaxing and thus valuable in massage and baths for anyone experiencing stress. It helps you treat arthritis, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, sprains, and stiffness. It is also a good skin oil and can help treat acne, cuts, oily skin, and dry mature/aging skin. It helps soften and hydrate the skin by helping the body naturally detoxify connective tissue and the epidermis through capillary stimulation. It can also sometimes help regenerate cells.Because it helps stimulate a depressed immune system, Vetiver can help the lymph nodes function properly. Tonic to urinary excreting system. Advisory:Has a strong scent so use sparingly or it will take over. It is a thick oil.
